Abstract
This chapter will suggest that the reduction of the Trump election to a “populist revolt” against elites, has the effect of minimizing or obliterating the importance of the “colour line” in U.S. politics. This minimizing of the colour line underpins the limits of narrow trade unionist responses which actually welcomed aspects of the Trump agenda. It will suggest the importance of deploying the category “psychological wage” introduced by W.E.B. DuBois and conclude with some comments on what this means for the left. Trump has carved out a political movement of the far right combining racism, misogyny and corporate power. The challenge is to put forward a solidaristic politics of the left — embracing the connections between race, class and gender.
