Abstract
This paper will suggest that there exists a half-hidden, and important tradition of self-activity – grounded not in textual exegesis, but rather in the complex needs of emerging social movements. We need to revisit the forgotten contributions of the Bund (General Jewish Workers’ Association [Bund] in Lithuania, Poland, and Russia) as well as the writings of Iulii Martov, Arakadii Kremer, Pavel Aksel’rod, and the young Lev Trotskii. These contributions are relevant both for our understanding of history, as well as contemporary political debates. They also shine a light on the limitations of theory overly reliant on decontextualized Critique.
