Abstract

Abstract: In this chapter we present a reflection on the phenomena of Whiteness
and racism in Latin America within a hybrid theoretical framework that
incorporates the tradition of studies on racism in North America, including
a theorization of White power and privilege (based on Whiteness studies),
as well as theoretical reflections on Whiteness (blanquitud) developed by the
critical Latin American perspective. It also reflects on the implications that
such phenomena have on the formal education systems well as the cultural/
societal spheres, especially in relation to social justice. At the end of the chapter
we offer a set of proposals related to implementing policies with the goal of
dismantling racism and White supremacy within, and through, the education
system. Such suggestions are based on a theoretical model developed by Paul R.
Carr in Canada through empirical studies on education and racism.
