An Equitable Approach to Academic Integrity Through Alternative Assessment

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

This chapter explores how alternative assessment can address all the reasons that lead to academic dishonesty. I present four reasons that have been shown in the research to contribute to academic dishonesty: (a) disengagement, (b) not being ready for the test, (c) high expectations and/or competition for higher grades, and (d) unauthorized collaboration. For each reason, I explore how alternative assessment can help address the issue in an equitable manner, outlining the relevant characteristics of this assessment approach. This chapter is significant to educators and learning designers committed to creating a more equitable assessment experience. The chapter concludes with a call to action.
