Project Details
Description
The Town of Athabasca is conducting a feasibility assessment for a Passive Solar Greenhouse (PSG) aimed at sustainable, low-carbon food production suited to Alberta's colder climate. This project will serve as a proof of concept for year-round local food production and climate adaptation.
In addition to PSG design, the study will explore regional food procurement trends and innovative business models like social enterprises and cooperatives. The initiative addresses key challenges, including agricultural decline, rural outmigration, and food insecurity worsened by climate change.
Athabasca University interns, in collaboration with local experts and community members, will assess the PSG's potential to enhance the local economy, improve food security, and support climate resilience.
