Research interests
Dr. Binch’s research streams include health systems research, particularly focusing on the new Ottawa Nurse Practitioner-Led Clinic https://www.ottawanplc.org; housing and health, with a particular interest in individuals who identify as homeless or marginally housed; and substance use health with previous projects focusing on the impacts of stimulants and opiates on overall health.
Dr. Binch’s pragmatic approach to research is grounded in her clinical practice experience as a nurse practitioner working with marginalized communities. Dr. Binch draws on social inclusion theory and ecological models with methodological expertise in case study methodology, ethnography, and community-based research.

Personal profile
Dr. Joanna Binch (she/her) is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Health Disciplines at Athabasca University. She is a primary care nurse practitioner, and community-based researcher. Dr. Binch has contributed to national guidelines for respiratory therapists working in primary care and more recently on guidelines and a continuing education program around infant-feeding practices in the context of HIV.
As a member of the Canadian Association of Nurses in HIV/AIDS care, Dr. Binch is looking to take on a leadership role. She continues to engage local nurse practitioners in the Ottawa Nurse Practitioner Community of Practice.
