Personal profile

I have been active in university administration as Associate Dean with various portfolios in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Athabasca University since 2016. As an associate professor in Biological Anthropology, I have taught a variety courses in human diversity, evolution, cognition, statistics and nonhuman primate behaviour, ecology and conservation. As an Adjunct Professor at the University of Calgary (Dept Anthropology and Archaeology) I teach undergraduate courses on a sessional basis. I also run a primate field methods and forest ecology program each spring in Belize and (for 2023) in Panama. My research areas include primate behaviour, ecology and communication. I have worked with chimpanzees in Uganda at the Budongo Forest project, and with howler and spider monkeys in Belize.

Research Interests

My research interests, both past and present, revolve broadly around topics in primate/mammalian behavioural ecology, animal communication and cognition, language evolution and human evolution more generally.
