Digital Avatar and Twin (DAT) for Telepresence Robot-Empowered Smart Lab

Impact: Scholarly, Economic

Description of impact

This project leveraged robot telepresence technology, particularity VR/AR/MR technologies, to create a smart laboratory to enhance hands-on and first-person experiences for online distance learners. Implementation of a remote-control system for a telepresence robot and its digital twin using an
online interface created an experimental environment that allowed participants to remotely manipulate the real telepresence robot (origibot) in Athabasca University's science lab. The digital twin of the robot was also available online for participants to manipulate with or without VR gears. The participants gained both real and virtual lab work experience and skills by manipulating both real and virtual robots online to perform designed laboratory tasks.

This project promotes telepresence remote labs for both research and training activities. Telepresence Robot-Empowered Smart Labs are viable options for engaging the next generation of researchers and equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully operate in a lab based environment.
